I bought this book because it’s hard to find book on weight gain. I had no illusions about it, expected some sort of gimmicky approach. While I can’t say it’s really gimmicky, I’m horrified by the number of ready-made, off-the-shelf ingredients in the recipes & recommnended ‘foods’. I’m Australian, into ‘real’ foods. The other negative is that the quantities mentioned in meals are so big I would be sick if I attempted to eat that much. I’m intrigued by the idea of cutting down on protein, in favour of carbs & fat, & will continue as now, with plenty of cream, butter etc. I love the idea of lying down after a meal, but I won’t don a sweater for meals.

In a nut shell, this book says to look at nutrition labels and eat any and all things high in fat. Bacon, whole milk, red meat, etc. Sounds like the way to achieve heart disease rather than gain weight. I was very disappointed!

I was underweight almost all my life. I tried a few things that I thought would help me gain weight, but never seemed to help. I became to think sometimes that gaining weight was impossible. Then there were times that I thought it might be possible to actually gain weight if I really put a lot of effort. I was confused and people told me all sort of information. I had no idea what would be the first step or how to start. I knew I didn’t have some kind of disease although I bet some people thought I did. I felt so incomplete and disappointed at myself for being so skinny. People made fun of me and when I was a kid I was picked on just for being smaller.
It was not until I read Dr. David Reuben’s Weight-Gain book when I finally began to understand what it takes to really gain weight. I was searching for “Weight gain” in Amazon to get some information with desperation. I came across this book as one of the listings and thought I’d give it a try. I read this book carefully and thoroughly and felt positive about trying to gain weight this time. There were a lot of things that I never knew before in this book. However, there were some things that were obvious in gaining weight such as what the previous reviewer commented about the book recommending to find food high in fat, but this reviewer is also misunderstanding Dr.Reuben.
Dr.Reuben mentions in Chapter 7 about the fact that it takes years and years or decades of eating massive amounts of fat to produce even the slightest hazard to your health. The book assumes that you’ll gain weight in a few months. The risk of death and serious disease as an underweight is far greater than that of even a lifetime of a high-fat diet. It took me less than a year to gain about 35 pounds. I’m very proud of myself and I thank Dr. David Reuben a lot. I feel as if this genius man saved my life.
